Exciting opportunity to join The Stripey Badger Bookshop team!

If you love books and people, have social media and IT skills, organisational and creativity abilities, then you could become a bookseller with us. This is a permanent 24 hour a week position, on a 12 month temporary contract.

Closing Date: 8th October 2021 with interviews for successful candidates to be held Tuesday 19th October.


We are looking for a bookseller (ideally with bookselling experience and a people-central personality) to become part of the Stripey Badger team.

This is a part-time role on a temporary 12 month contract with 24 hours a week but also requiring flexibility to cover holidays and events.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a love of books and people, a vibrant personality, an eye for detail and a sense of creativity. 

Main Duties

Serving customers and recommending books

Daily bookshop administration which can include:

  • Booking in new stock
  • Putting new orders onto the system
  • Working at the till
  • Organising shelves and displays
  • Answering customer queries in person and on the phone
  • Picking and posting customer orders
  • Keeping up to date with current titles and recommending books to customers
  • Being proactive with social media campaigns
  • Creating window displays
  • Helping to to host and promote events, book clubs and book launches

Essential skills

Retail experience, ideally bookselling

An enthusiastic, personable approachable positive friendly helpful and social personality

Strong organisational and administrative skills

Strong customer service skills

Creativity in considering new and exciting ways to sell books

This is a permanent 24 hour a week position, based on a 12 month temporary contract.

Pay will be £9.00 per hour.

The Stripey Badger bookshop is based in Grassington, near Skipton. Events are usually based in Grassington.

The filming of All CreatuJames Patterson awardres Great & Small set Grassington as 'Darrowby' with the bookshop featuring as grocers G F Endleby, and the coffee shop & kitchen being transformed into a private house, behind whose doors the actors and crew assembled in between takes.

Surrounded by the wonderful National Park countryside, the Stripey Badger is the perfect place to experience Yorkshire hospitality at its best.

Sister businesses, the Stripey Badger Coffee Shop & Kitchen is run by Jackie, who prides herself on home baking and on showcasing Yorkshire treats.  Try the Stripey Badger breakfast, scones or tea loaf to see what we mean!

The independent Stripey Badger Bookshop next door is run by Linda, who has had a lifetime ambition to run a bookshop, and son James. The bookshop stocks titles of all genres for adults and children, as well as book-related gifts and cards, and Yorkshire maps and guide books for the visitor.

In our first year, 2018, we were fortunate to win two awards; James was a recipient of the James Patterson Young Booksellers Award and the Stripey Badger won Best Shop/Retailer in the Stray FM Skipton & Beyond Awards.
